Gianni Cossar, Global Director Optics & Eyewear, GfK Retail & Technology Italy, GfK Consumer Choices

Hear What Key Buyers Have to Say

“Established in 1998, Star Optical is a wholesaler of frames and sunglasses in Iran and has our own brands. With a population of 80 million, Iran is a huge market for frames and sunglasses. According to our estimation, 20 per cent of our people use frames and 50 per cent wear sunglasses. I come to the Hong Kong Optical Fair every year to meet our existing suppliers and look for new suppliers. On the first day of the fair, I have already placed orders for HK$150,000 worth of frames and sunglasses with three of our existing suppliers from the Chinese mainland, Korea and Taiwan. I like the Hong Kong Optical Fair, and I’ll definitely come again next year.”
Reza Shamsababdi, President, Star Optical, Iran

“With 16 years of experience in running a weekly optical newspaper in Korea, I set up an online optical store in June 2015, selling all kinds of frames, sunglasses, contact lenses, lenses, cases and other eyewear accessories. Currently, thin, round-shaped frames are popular in Korea. I have visited the Hong Kong Optical Fair for many times as a media representative, but this year I have come here as a buyer. With the help of the HKTDC’s business matching team, I have found two potential suppliers of plastic frames and plan to buy 4,000 pairs in assorted colours and styles from each supplier after the show because they offer good quality and competitive prices. The Hong Kong Optical Fair is the best place for me to source new products because I can meet quality suppliers and find Asian styles which meet the tastes of Korean consumers. I’ll be back next year.”
Hyun-mo Jung, Vice President, Optical Korea Co., Ltd, Korea

Hear What Exhibitors Have to Say
“Chang’s Optical is a leading high-end eyewear distributor which represents 10 designer brands in the Greater China region. These brands include Dita, FEB31st, HAPTER, ic! berlin, mad in italy, Massada, Onono, Ørgreen, Rolf spectacles and Thom Browne, which come from Europe, Japan and the US. This is our fifth year at the Hong Kong Optical Fair to demonstrate the craftsmanship of these designer brands and to expand our presence in the Chinese mainland market. The HKTDC has done a good job in promoting the Hong Kong Optical Fair to quality buyers from the mainland. Mainland consumers like tailor-made and personalised eyewear products. That’s why our company acquired the right earlier this year to distribute FEB31st spectacles which allow customers to add their names, signatures, graphics and words to temples. At the fair, we have met with a lot of buyers from all over the world. We’ll definitely return to the fair because it is the perfect brand-building platform.”
Mabel Sze, Brand Manager, Chang’s Optical Asia Limited, Hong Kong

“Sodamon specialises in the design and production of outdoor sports sunglasses, fashionable sunglasses, and frames in Korea, with Asia, Europe and North America as our major markets. Our brands include npng, olli, Horntooth, Attem III, TO, Kids, Lookie and Wing. We see the Chinese mainland as a big market for our branded eyewear products. As Hong Kong is an important gateway to the mainland market, we have joined the Hong Kong Optical Fair for the first time to further develop the mainland market as well as the markets in Europe and North America and to let more buyers know our company and our brands. On the first day of the fair, we are happy to have found two potential buyers from the Philippines and Taiwan who are interested in bringing our products to department stores in their markets.”
Justin Cha, Manager, Foreign Division, Sodamon, Inc., Korea
